THE CHURCH AND MONASTERY OF ST. CHIARA

The foundation of the Church and Monastery of Santa Chiara is owed to the Acquaviva d’Aragona family, more precisely to the Duke of Atri and Count of Conversano, Gian Girolamo I Acquaviva d’Aragona who on 2 October 1557 granted Donna Anna Acquaviva d’Aragona, Abbess of the Monastery of Santa Chiara, the ancient church of S. Bartolomeo, «so that, once rebuilt, it would become the church of the new monastery».
