THE CHURCH OF CARMINE

Thanks to some archival sources, we know that the Carmelite convent was founded in 1619 and built a short distance from the walls, near the city gate that led to Turi.

In 1652 it was closed, but 10 years later it was decreed to reopen. Thanks to the Countess Isabella Filomarino della Rocca, wife of the Count of Conversano Giangirolamo. II Acquaviva d’Aragona and nephew of the powerful Cardinal Ascanio Filomarino, the church was built and completed in 1662.
